Top 10 Films for Small Group Discussions
Yesterday afternoon a group of friends got together to celebrate one of our birthdays by seeing the movie The Family That Preys. Tyler Perry wrote, produced, directed, and had a supporting role in the latest of his feature films.
He has a gift for telling engaging stories that get right to the heart of issues in our society, and audiences really enjoy his films. When you walk away from one of them, you’re talking about what you just saw.
Whether done intentionally or as the offshoot of going to the theater with friends, films can start great dialogue. Here are some of my favorite conversation-starter movies.
- Lord, Save Us From Your Followers – Just the title itself gets people talking.
- The Cross – Less a travelogue than one man’s passion to tell people one at a time about Jesus.
- God of Wonders – Not an answer to evolutionists, but an exploration of the incredible beauty and design of our world. What DO you believe about creation?
- The Book of Eli – What would it look like if only one copy of the Bible existed after the apocalypse? How far would you go to protect the Word of God?
- The Blind Side – In her mind, Sandra Bullock’s Academy-Award winning performance is nothing compared to what ordinary people do every day to make a difference in the community around them. What are you doing to help? What might this story inspire you to do?
- Beyond the Gates – One of my favorite films and one of the hardest to watch. Where is God in the midst of man’s devastation of his fellow man?
- Joshua - What if Jesus showed up in our town today?
- Any VeggieTales movie – Who says only grown-ups want to have conversation? Talk with your kids about the truths these films teach.
- The Jesus Film – Who is He? What did He mean in history? What does He mean in your life?
- Most (The Bridge) – What does sacrificial love look like?
What are your favorite discussion-starting films?

Yes, that’s a good list
I would change Beyond the Gates to End of the Spear. It’s more in your face I think, as it is the theatrical version of Beyond the Gates. And at the end there is a reason given as to how things work out for good ..
