“Saving Sarah Cain” Premieres on Lifetime Network

This weekend, the Lifetime Network is premiering “Saving Sarah Cain” on Sunday, August 19th, at 6 PM (Eastern & Pacific), 5 PM (Central), and 4 PM (Mountain). The latest film from partners Michael Landon, Jr., and Brian Bird (The Last Sin Eater) is based on Beverly Lewis’ novel “The Redemption of Sarah Cain.” (At right: Beverly helps cast member Danielle Chuchran stay warm on the set)

In July, over 600 guests at the annual International Christian Retail Show were treated to a sneak preview of the movie that started off with a mini-concert by Point of Grace. (The title song from their new album “How You Live” is a featured part of the beautiful soundtrack for the film.) After a question-and-answer session with Michael, Brian, Beverly Lewis, and Soren Fulton and Abigail Mason (cast members), the audience stood to their feet in a spontaneous ovation.

Sunday night, pop some popcorn and sit down with the whole family to enjoy this film. Look for Elliott Gould in a very fun role, and some youthful actors who have great futures ahead of them. If you don’t have cable, find a friend that does and invite yourself over to their house! Television programs live and die by ratings based on the number of viewers watching, so let’s get as many people to watch this film as possible.

After you watch it, come back here and give us your reviews. Tell us what you think, good and bad.
Other favorites that have been written, directed, and/or produced by Michael Landon, Jr., and Brian Bird (not necessarily together) are:

Frisbee: The Life and Death of a Hippie Preacher

The Touched by an Angel series

Good movie…heart touching. Although…I wished it would have ended very differently then what it did…still a good lifetime movie!!!

  2. Caroline Taylor says:

We Loved the movie! My mother who is 77 and who lives with me and my longtime companion of 30 yrs loved the movie and would love to see a weekly series made from it.We all enoy Lifetime and all the diversified shows that it airs. Keep up the great work Lifetime!

  3. Faith Sheppard says:

One of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time. Very moving, tender and touching. Where can I get a copy?

  4. Sam says:

It was a very touching movie. Being and immigrant myself, I found this to be a movie that I can relate to. I come from a very fundamentalist type of Christian background and when I came to American, I had to adopt a lot of the American customs. As I think about how these 5 kids had to change themselves to fit in, I felt like I had to do sort of the same to fit in, and sometimes hiding those changes from my parents in fear of despising or rejecting their convictions.

  5. Melanie Allen says:

This was such a sweet, heartwarming, wonderful movie.

  6. Susan Barham says:

What can I say? This movie was like a light in a dark forest. I found it by accident when it had just started, and I was hesitant to watch it at first as I’m realistic as to what types of movies are constantly being shown nowdays, particularly on Lifetime. I was more than pleasantly surprised, though! No bad language, sex, violence, etc. Just a delightful and interesting story. It even touched on prayer and faith in God in a good way, not in a strange, sort of condescending way as it often is by some moviemakers. This movie is wonderful for the whole family, which is the only kind of viewing I like anyway, even when the family’s not watching with me! I wish “Saving Sarah Cain” could be a new series now. It seems like it was left way open in the end. A series, please?

  7. Cheryl Bolack says:

I have just finished watching “Saving Sarah Cain”. I knew very little about the movie before sitting down to watch it. I had received an email from a friend saying that a teacher who I use to teach with niece had written the book. I read the piece of information above since it was attached to the email. I sent the email that I had received to several people that I know who are Christians and enjoy good movies and shows that are scarce on the cable. I have already heard from a couple of them saying how awesome the movie was. I cried the last 40 minutes of the movie. It was a terrific movie!! I only pray there will be a sequel. I see Sarah and her fellow raising the children in the plain world. I want to see it in a movie, please.

  8. Cindy Blatt says:

What a great movie. Michael Landon Jr. did a great job turning Mrs. Lewis’s book into a movie. My only problem is that the ending left you hanging and wanting more. I would love to see a sequl regarding how Sara ajusted to living in the amish community. Thanks for a great movie
    Cindy

  9. Debbi Howard says:

I watched Saving Sarah Cain today - it was wonderful. I read the book quite a while back and the movie was nearly as good as the book, but then it was different from the book, too. I lived in Lancaster County for over 25 years. I thought the portrayal of the Amish was pretty accurate - except when they were in front of a white barn that was DIRTY. The Amish I was around would never have a dirty white barn! I recommend this movie to everyone - and have tissues handy when you watch it. BTW, Liddy was excellent with all of her tearful scenes!!

  10. Shelley says:

Wonderful movie! I raised my children in an area very close to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. We had frequent interaction with the Amish community at the grocery stores, fabric shops, restaurants, hardware stores etc. This seems like a very real depiction of their life.

Please tell me this will become a series.

  11. Marjorie Krell says:

My 10 year old granddaughter is visiting, but was gone while I watched. I had immediately told her this would be a movie she would love…and that it had the Little House “touch”. (I had missed the first 5 minutes and didn’t even realize Michael Landon, Jr. was involved.) I got a phone call just as Sarah was going to read the letter from her sister, and although I didn’t answer, it still interrupted my train of thought. So, I need to see the ending again. More movies like this (especially on Lifetime!!) are needed as I’m so tired of the children hearing all this bad language in so many shows that would otherwise be rather cute. A wonderful movie!

  12. Leslie Matthews says:

What a vision Michael Landon Jr. has in promoting Christian and Family based films! I loved “Saving Sarah Cain” and I would recommend it to everyone both young and old. Make sure you have tissue in hand and know that your heart will be touched. I also loved “The Last Sin Eater” by Michael Landon and bought several copies to give as gifts. It is so refreshing to see films with a touching message and brings hope to humanity!

  13. Nancy McClung says:

Please offer Saving Sarah Cain on DVD so I can give it as gifts to my Family.
Loved it! We need more of the same for Family viewing. Let me know if or when I can purchase it. Thanks.

  14. Judy Day says:

I have read all of Beverly Lewis’ books about the Amish. I was pleased with the movie adaptation of The Redemption of Sarah Cain. I hope to see more of her books made into movies. ABRAM’S DAUGHTERS would make a good series. I agree that a sequel to this movie about Sarah would be interesting. Thanks for bringing us something inspiring!

  15. Karla says:

Good movie, but not as wonderful as the book. I recommend everyone go out and read Beverly Lewiss’ book “The Redemption of Sarah Cain.” It’s wonderful. If you enjoyed this movie you will love Beverly’s books. They are my favorites to read. She has lots to pick from, many of them are about Amish people. Try them!

  17. Shari Bieber says:

My husband and I watched the movie and it was fantastic. I loved the story line and would recommend it to anyone. Good family movie. I think it would make a fantastic series.

  18. Shari Bieber says:

My husband and I watched the movie and it was fantastic. A good clean family movie and I would recommend it highly. I loved the story line. A series please!!!

  19. JLS says:

I lived in Lancaster for 20 years. The portrayal of the Amish wasn’t entirely realistic. They sure made the Amish seem a lot more friendly to the “English” (non-Amish) than they are in reality!

Plus, the Amish kids weren’t even selling crack like they do in Lancaster.

  20. Danny Rolling says:

Such a fabulous story. It moved me and my children to tears. This movie has helped confirm that my path to Jesus is the righteous way. And JLS, I will pray for you. God bless you all.

  21. Angela Walker says:

Glad everyone enjoyed the film so much. We’ve been told the DVD will release either later this year or early next year.

  22. Susan says:

Oh what a wonderful film! I so much enjoyed “Saving Sarah Cain”!! In fact I am here because I was searching to see if it was going to be a series. Would love to see more, even though I was reduced to tears when she drove away! How refreshing to have something so touching on television.

  23. D.K. Elzy says:

I never get tired of watching the movies that Michael LandonJr. has made. I have watched the Loves comes Softly series so much I know it by heart and this new movies was just as good. It is so hard to find movies with Christian vaules in todays world. And to many people get into all of the games on the internet they have no “Family Time”. My daughters are grown and I am a widow but I love all the movies he has done. He make me realize not all of the younger generation has gone “SECULAR”. Please keep making such great movies and I will be a fan forever. Thanks again

  24. D.K. Elzy says:

I don’t understand what kind of a reply you want?

  25. Angela Walker says:

There is so much on the internet these days about “bad Christian movies.” I’d like to see some positive comments about good Christian movies. Or, if you don’t think it’s good, why not?

Christian filmmakers, like those in Hollywood, are constantly looking at new projects, and part of their consideration is - will audiences like this? Are there similar films that have been released that have had a good response? If this film isn’t liked, why not? So your feedback helps tell the industry what you want to see more of, or what you want to see less of.

  26. Karen says:

I loved the movie it was so good. I liked the book just as much. It is nice to have a movie that is not about sex, violence etc…

I also hope there is either a sequal or a series about it.

  27. Jane says:

This was an excellent move. My only objection to the movie was that it equated being a “simple” Amish person with being a true Christian. by watching the movie, one would assume that, for example, wearing fashionable clothing would exclude them from heaven and would prevent such a person from pleasing God. This assumption confuses the redemptive work of Christ with the Christian’s attempt to live righteously. Still, the movie would be an excellent vehicle to use to illustrate those important doctrinal differences among professing believers. I would like to have seen a dialogue between a conservative non-Amish believer and one of the children, for example. Belivers who watch this movie should point out that Christians are not saved by what they DO, but by Christ — even though believers SHOULD certainly understand their duty to try and obey God’s commands. I thought the movie provided good scenes with very real circumstances to discuss God’s commands and the importance of living for Christ. If this movie were available on DVD, I would definitely buy it.

  28. Debby says:

After waiting for so long to see this movie it slipped by me. Does anyone know when it will be shown again?

  29. Bonnie E. Fortuna says:

I was out of town and out of touch, since my phone and computer system was down when I returned on Sunday, so when we turned in at 7:55 to watch the movie, all we saw was Sarah Cain’s look and the credits. I hope this will be offered again!

  30. Judi Wright says:

This was a well written, well acted story. It was spiritual and uplifting and brought tears. How do I purchase a copy of this movie?

  31. Angela Walker says:

It’s our understanding that the DVD will be released late this year; possibly in late December.

  32. Ellen says:

Could you tell me where I could get the soundtrack, I loved all the songs.

  33. Esther says:

Great movie! Definitely a Michael Landon idea. I’m sure if he were alive today, he would have co-produced it along with his son. Saw it twice and cried both times!!

  34. Kim says:

I have sent an e-mail to Ms. Lewis as well, but feel so strongly about the movie I wanted to include my comments here. I have read every book of Beverly Lewis’ except The Sunroom. I read The Redemption of Sarah Cain. This book was LOOSELY based on this wonderful, beautiful book. I was shocked by the portrayal of the Amish children when brought to the city. The book was based in Lancaster. I read an earlier comment about wishing their would be a sequel to see how Sarah adapted to Amish life. I would suggest reading the book. This movie pales in comparison to the beautiful story Ms. Lewis gave us. Was it a good movie? Yes, it far above most movies we have an opportunity to watch, but it is nothing more than a watered down version of the book and I’m shocked Ms. Lewis approved the final product. I prefer to bury my head in the sand and assume she didn’t have any say in the matter.

  35. Libby says:

I watched the movie yesterday and It’s still in my heart and thoughts today. All day! I hope lifetime will run it again with plenty of advertising before time so more people will have a chance to know that it’s being played. Wonderful movie !

  36. Judy says:

I enjoyed the movie tremendously. I happened upon it by accident myself the other day. I came to the computer to see where I could purchase this movie as well as another I watched the same day. It is a beautiful story and I’m always amazed even in my own life how I can make up my mind about something, and then see it change right before my eyes…..much like Sarah. How many times I have done things I thought were right and good for another, only to learn they were MY ideas and not really right for them…..I love touchy, feely movies and this truly touched my heart! What a beautiful change from some of the vulgar and shocking movies and programs on these days. I will read the book as suggested by others here.

  37. wendy allen says:

saving sarah was very inspirational movie. They need more great movies like this. The very first song played made me cry and really touched my heart. I believe it was inspired by God himself. I want the song but I don’t know who they are!

  38. Sharon says:

I wasn’t able to see this movie. I wonder if Lifetime will show it again.

  39. Karen Gracianette says:

  40. Karen Gracianette says:

i hope the whole world, gets a change to see this amazing movie.

  41. Angela Walker says:

Karen, it’s our understanding that the DVD will be released at the end of this year. You’ll be able to order it from ChristianCinema.com. If you enjoyed that film, make sure you have seen Michael’s other films: the Love Comes Softly series, as well as The Last Sin Eater.

  42. Darlene Mullins says:

The movie was great, a blessing to watch. I am hoping that there will be more to this movie considering the way it ended.

I would love to see more movies like this. It is nice to see Michael Landon, Jr. producing a quality product like his father did.

Thank you so much for this. It is a movie that I could watch over and over as long as I have plenty of tissues.

  43. Anita says:

What made me watch this movie was seeing Michael Landon Jr.’s name. I hadn’t seen this advertised, but after reading the subject line, I decided to watch. WOW, was I glad I did. Outstanding movie! What a great story line and the acting was excellent. I would love to see more of these types of movies or even make this a series. Very heartfelt film and great for all the family to watch. Please make more….

  44. Gail says:

I am a dedicated fan of Beverly Lewis. I have read all her books. I have to say I was disappointed with the movie. I wish it was more like the book.

Let’s see more movies based on Ms. Lewis’ wonder works.

    She is my favorite writer.

  45. Aleta says:

Michael Landon, Jr.gave us a magnificent production in “Saving Sarah Cain” with his adaptation of Beverly Lewis’ book,”The Redemption of Sarah Cain”. The children of the Amish family and their lifestyle were very poignant. I have read all of Lewis’ books. They are a treasured part of my library. More movies of her books will be appreciated.

  46. Iris Jones says:

I watched the movie Sunday and Monday. It was very enjoyable. I didn’t want it to stop as it is such a wonderful story. I have read the book and even though the movie was somewhat different the main thought was not lost.
I would like to see more movies like this one.

  47. Carrie Shindorf says:

Please tell when this will air again. I missed this first showing!!

  48. Taylor says:

I heard that Saving Sarah Cain did a 2.4 rating in the national ratings, which means over two million people tuned in. I also heard that Fox will release the DVD on January 15, 2008. And after that, Lifetime has the rights to show it on their network for the next 10 years.

  49. Shelley says:

I was hoping it would be released before Christmas so I could get it as a gift for some people.

  50. Bonnie Kriscka says:

We were on vacation the night that “Saving Sarah Cain” aired on Lifetime on Aug 19th, but I had seen the previews and knew we wanted to see it, so I recorded it. Unfortunately, the time on our recorder was off and we missed the last ten minutes of the movie. Do you know if it is scheduled to be shown again in the future? We loved the movie and are very anxious to see how it ended.

    Thanks for your help,
    Bonnie Kriscka

  51. debbie west says:

I had the movie taped so just got around to watching it last night. Much to my delight i saw it was from a book by Barbara Lewis . i just started reading her books I bought 1 at a yard sale in july and i’m on my 3rd 1 now. We live very close to the Amish community of Middlefield, Ohio The amish are truly remarkable people.

  52. upset in kansas/texas says:

WHEN IS IT SHOWING AGAIN???!!!!???? WE WANT TO SEE IT BEFORE JANUARY!!!!

  53. Angela Walker says:

It would be great to see this film before January, but right now, there is no information on LifeTime Network’s website to indicate they’re playing it again. You may want to visit their website Lifetimetv.com and use their “Contact Us” function. Let them know you’d like the movie to either be played again or shown on their “Lifetime on Demand” program. They often repeat their movies after a few months, but perhaps if enough people ask, they’ll replay.

  54. Deborah says:

I would have liked to have seen it. I do not have that station and not sure if it is available in Canada? Will it be on a Canadian station?

  55. Angela Walker says:

Deborah - I don’t know if it will be shown on a Canadian station. Right now, Lifetime is the only network with television rights. But - good news! The DVD will be released early next year.

  56. Jeremy says:

Just so everybody knows. The DVD is being released today. It should be in stores everywhere.

  57. Angela Walker says:

Thanks Jeremy - and the DVD is available at ChristianCinema.com here.!

  58. Taylor Benson says:

I’ve seen Saving Sarah Cain advertised on Pay-per-view for $3.99.

  59. Angela Walker says:

Taylor thanks for that information! That’s a good source, also.

  60. Judy says:

I have bought the DVD and it touched my heart the second time as much as the first. I have shared it with one family who loved it and will continue to do so. So heartwarming and such a blessing to see decent movies……
