Romantic Films for Valentine’s Day?

One of my favorite genres for mindless viewing is the rom-com. Romantic comedy. Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks in Sleepless in Seattle. Sandra Bullock and Hugh Grant in Two Weeks Notice. Sandra Bullock and Bill Pullman in While You were Sleeping. Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks in You’ve Got Mail. There are others, but those are some of my favorites.

That genre hasn’t been tackled by Christian filmmakers yet. Perhaps I need to write one? In lieu of a selection of Christian, or faith-friendly rom-coms, I’ve selected a few films with romantic stories that you might want to watch this weekend.

Belle and the Beast – a retelling of the classic Beauty and the Beast

No Greater Love – A husband and wife reunite after a long separation and must overcome great differences to restoring their marriage

Moonlight & Mistletoe – A Christmas story about a man and a woman trying to save their small town’s businesses

Persuasion - A classic romance from Jane Austen

Love Comes Softly – An epic tale of romance in several generations

There are several more, but these are some recent favorites. What movies will you be watching this weekend?

    really?!?

i agree on everything except for no greater love. terrible movie all around. such a waste of time! we, as christians, just need to make well made movies with a christian worldview, not sermons put into “acting” (using the term loosely) form. UP was the best christian movie all year. so redeeming!

I own “No Greater Love” and watched it recently. It took a difficult story and showed the struggles involved in a husband and wife having difficulties early in their marriage and their choices. I know it was not big budget but I believe it was well done and really touched my heart. I also think that it did not use easy answers and made me think there was room for a sequel regarding the husband’s faith journey.

My favorite of all is probably “Two Weeks Notice”. I think Sandra and Hugh had some great chemistry. I would have said the old standbye, “You Got Mail” but I never cared for Meg Ryan.
