Review from “The Office” - 36 Parables
No, not the television series - our office! Our staff members LOVE movies, and we would all probably vote Rod to be the movie king around here. I think he has more titles in his personal collection than we do on our website. It’s a pretty common occurrence to see someone exchanging DVDs with Rod. So he’s a natural when it comes to reviewing movies. Recently he shared his thoughts about the 36 Parables series with us.
I like that they make me think about the point they’re trying to pull out of the parable
Filmmakers Stewart Redwine and John Schimke have undertaken an ambitious project to re-tell the parables of Jesus with modern film-making. Each DVD they release contains 3 parables; their goal is to produce 12 DVDs altogether. I think they’re courageous because they don’t have the backing of a distributor, yet are determined to finish what they’ve started.
I like that they make me think about the point they’re trying to pull out of the parable. Instead of offering the interpretation I expect of well-known Scripture, they bring out things that I didn’t initially notice in my reading of the parables. I also appreciate the tools they provide for Bible study. I can understand and apply the truths they present without needing a degree in theological studies. They’ve gone out of their way to make these useful teaching tools.
Even though the films are short, they are very well-done. The cinematography is good and they have good production value. I think the scripts are well-written and the acting is good.
I want to see them continue their project and I’m hopeful they can reach their goal. When they’re done, the whole 12 DVD set will be a great resource for creating group discussion and discussing sermons.
Buy the first 3 in the set now and help support these up-and-coming Christian filmmakers reach their goal.
