War figures prominently in several films nominated for Best Picture: Avatar, District 9, The Hurt Locker, and Inglorious Basterds. Other Best Picture nominees are based on books: Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire (which has the longest title) and The Blind Side, which earned lead actress Sandra Bullock a nomination for best actress.
The Coen brothers (Joel & Ethan) make an appearance on the list with their film A Serious Man, as does George Clooney with Up in the Air, and Walt Disney Studios with their marvelous film Up. The other nominee in the category is BBC Films coming-of-age story An Education.
Who will win? Will the Academy follow popular opinion or will they hold out for choices that reflect the current climate in Hollywood?
