Life is Short, Do What Matters
This morning one of the first pieces of news I saw was about Natasha Richardson, actress and wife of Liam Neeson. While taking a skiing lesson north of Montreal on Monday, she fell, but quickly regained her footing. After about an hour, she began to complain of headaches, and was rushed to a nearby hospital. Liam Neeson flew from Toronto, where he was filming, and joined her in Montreal. Tuesday she was flown to New York City, where she was admitted to Lenox Hill Hospital.
This afternoon, the family made an announcement that Natasha Richardson, 45 years old, had died. She is survived by her husband and their two sons ages 13 and 12.
I don’t know why this has impacted me so much. Maybe it’s because a friend’s mother died suddenly last week, or that today would have been my mother’s birthday, if she were still alive. Or maybe it’s an increased sense of the fleeting nature of life. Days seem to stretch out in front of us, with years still ahead. But we have no guarantee of that.
So I’m evaluating: What am I doing with my life that matters? How am I spending my days? Am I doing the important things or letting the urgent push the them aside?
What are you doing that matters?

A definite memento mori moment. These occur to remind us that God is the end (telos) of our labor.
