Gracie is Facing the Giants
For Christians wanting to see good clean movies coming out of Hollywood, here’s one. It’s based on true events from actress Elisabeth Shue’s life, who played soccer on her brother’s high school varsity team after he was killed in an accident. But it’s not just about soccer. It’s also about a young girl wanting her father’s love and approval and the chance to play in a male-dominated sport - a sport she loves.
It’s a family project. Elisabeth plays the mother, her brother Andrew plays the assistant soccer coach, and her husband Davis Guggenheim directed and co-wrote the script. The film ends with a quote by Elisabeth as a 6th-grader; she wants to play soccer when she grows up. Instead, she turned to acting.
This is a good family film. In some ways, it’s very similar to Facing the Giants. It’s a little predictable, and things work out as expected in the end. But, like Giants, it’s a heart-warming story.
The only thing wrong with this film was that I was the only person in the theater. I don’t mind watching movies by myself, but I didn’t expect to be the sole viewer on a Saturday afternoon. Gracie is up against some strong competition: Pirates of the Caribbean, Ocean’s 13, Shrek 3 and Mr. Brooks, but is ranked 11th at the box office. Makes me wonder how many people are attending the movies ranked lower than 11th?
I hope more people go see it and that I’m the only one who has to watch it by themself.
