Hi RD,

When a book is optioned for a film, the author is giving the director permission to take their story concept to use. Sometimes the director's story ideas will take a departure from the written books, and that's really their job - to take ideas and craft stories from them.

Sometimes it's done because they may have ideas for changes for characters, or if they want to film in a certain way, and are limited by locations or people, they have to change the story to fit what they can do.

Also, after the 4th in the series Love's Abiding Joy, Michael Landon, Jr., was no longer the director. In fact, Love's Unending Legacy was directed by Michael Griffiths, and Love's Unfolding Dream was directed by Harvey Frost. So you may see some more changes in storylines with the changes in directors.

I really love your books. My favorite so far are The Love Comes Softly series. But I was wondering, Why did they have to change so much of the story for the movies. I liked the first movie and the second one was good. But the rest change so much from the story that you have writen. I love to read and I was looking so forward to seeing all of the movies. I know that you when a book is turned into a movie there has to be some changes but did they have to go that far. It is sad because I can't really enjoy, at all, any of the movies except 1 and 2. I know that this has really nothing to do with the above but I just needed to ask that question. I hope that in some way I may get some kind of answer.
