Beyond Global Warming

When I heard the news that Al Gore was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts concerning global warning, I thought it was a joke. Seriously. For someone so concerned with the environment and his “carbon footprint,” his lifestyle doesn’t reflect that. I could go on and on, but lots of other people do that already.

I have hope that with God’s help and man’s persistence, we can address these desperate needs.

What I want to suggest here is that you get a copy of Turk Pipkin’s wonderful documentary Nobelity. He goes beyond the most highly-publicized problem facing our world to engage 9 Nobel Laureates in conversations about the greatest concerns we face. What amazed me about the film was the accessibility of these fascinating men and women who have made it their life’s work to help find solutions.

Greater than the environmental issues are the national crises that arise all around the globe. What about hunger in third-world countries? Is it possible to achieve peace in the Middle East? (By the way, if you haven’t seen the stunning film “The Kingdom,” I cannot recommend it enough.) Who will help the thousands of women and children who are being violently raped daily in the Congo?

Is there a cure possible for AIDS and cancer and multiple sclerosis, and multitudes of other diseases that claim lives on an hourly basis?

The problems seem overwhelming and unanswerable, but the beauty of Nobelity is that I am left with a hope that with God’s help and persistence, we can begin to address these desperate needs and huge questions.
