Alvin & the Chipmunks

A couple of days ago, my sister, her kids and I went to see the new “Alvin & the Chipmunks” movie. We went to an early show, so the theater was filled with young kids. I love the sound of kids laughing, and there was plenty to be heard during this cute and charming film.

The movie critics hated brought in $44 million so far at the box office.

It starts with a song while the chipmunks are squirreling away nuts for the winter. As they’re complaining about being tired of nuts and their tree home, their tree is chopped down to go to the city and be placed in a big building. The combination of live action and animation was terrific, and the CGI for the chipmunks was quite good.

There were no great surprises in this movie, but I think that’s part of what made it so enjoyable. Jason Lee plays Dave Seville, who discovers the chipmunks and their musical abilities.

While the film has been dished by the critics, I enjoyed it. And so did the kids, the audience at whom it was aimed. Yes, there are moments of sophomoric humor, but it’s a kids’ movie. There are some kids’ movies that try to make adult humor funny to kids, and there are some movies that are enjoyable for kids. Period. Well, this kid enjoyed it.

Yet once again, a movie disliked by critics brings home a very respectable box office: $44 million and growing since December 14th.

Tomorrow, our whole family (brother, sisters, nieces & nephews) are going to see National Treasure: The Book of Secrets. Can’t wait.

If you see some of the new movies that are out, write in and let us know your opinion. We’re always looking for good movies to see.

I’m looking forward to seeing the new National Treasure, but probably will wait for it to come out on DVD. Wife isn’t too big on it.

I just seen “National Treasure: Book of Secrets” last night. It was very good. It had a good storyline and plenty of action. The language was mild, “not crude, or rude”. There was no nudity, or sex scenes, but it had some love stories going on. I personaly like that kind of drama/adventure/love story. I also like the actors.
It was a movie that I am not imbarassed to let Jesus see with me.

I loved this movie because the message of the movie was that family matters more than anything. More than fame, more than money, more than power. Seville was reluctant to claim the chipmunks as his “kids” which is sort of understandable. No rational adult would call rodents his “kids” but these are not typical rodents. They can love, feel fear and even have moments of greed. But in the end, Dave realizes these are his “boys” and the chipmunks learn money and fame are no good if you don’t have a family that cares about you. I can think of nothing more important to impart in a world that is fast becoming anti-family and anti-children.

I think that with many movies like this one the critics make the mistake of judging the movie on the wrong terms. I am fairly certain that Alvin and the Chipmunks is the kind of movie that you would expect it to be, and that it does what it does well. If you have to give it a ranking, at least give it a middle of the road rating to recognize that it achieved its modest goals, if not surpassing them.
