168-Hour Contest

What kind of film could you produce in one week (168 hours)? That’s the challenge set before nearly 80 filmmaking teams. Their guidelines were to translate a Bible verse based on the theme “Free the Captives,” and turn it into a 10-minute film.

Films are coming from as far away as Kenya (”Color Blind Killer” from a Kenyan-American team), and as close as Los Angeles (Joshua Weigel, Aaron Moore, and Jeff Bartsch). Topics include the AIDS crisis in Africa and the Holocaust.

One team’s leader (Mike Wech of Team Gideon) suffered a near-fatal car crash just weeks before the contest. Another team raised money for their project by hosting a New Year’s Party on New York Street on the CBS lot.

A lot of energy and creativity has gone into these films, and it will be interesting to see the results of all this hard work and creativity.

The 168 Hour Film Festival is in Glendale, CA, on Friday, April 11th, at the United Community Church, and Saturday, April 12th, at the Alex Theater.

Has anyone you know participated in this festival? Do you have any favorites going into the contest? If you had 168 hours to make a film based on a Bible verse with the theme “Free the Captives,” what would you do?
